Residents Block Road in Protest Against Tax on Foreign Workers
Residents of Gegharkunik Province have blocked the Yerevan-Martuni road in protest against new legislative changes from the State Revenue Committee (SRC). These changes require individuals working abroad to pay income tax in Armenia on earnings received from foreign countries.
The residents have blocked the road near the Zakqar community. This means that citizens who have gone abroad in search of work, due to a lack of employment opportunities at home, are now expected to declare and pay taxes on money earned in other countries, despite already being taxed there.
It is worth noting that the majority of those leaving Armenia for foreign work are from the Gegharkunik Province, particularly from Martuni, and the prospect of paying additional taxes to the state has angered them. They are demanding the cancellation of this legislative requirement.
Today, the SRC issued a statement indicating its readiness to begin discussions regarding this legislative regulation.
