Martuni Mayor on the Demands of Foreign Workers
The issue has been raised, the governor has spoken in relevant places and has made agreements, and it is currently in the discussion phase. This was stated today by Martuni community leader Hovik Hoveyan during an interview with journalists at the site of the protests by the residents of Martuni.
It should be noted that residents of the Gegharkunik region, particularly from Martuni, are protesting against a new law that requires those who work abroad to pay a 20% income tax in Armenia.
“People are aware that the issue is in the discussion phase. Some are not informed, but overall, they are aware. People have blocked the street now, demanding the governor, who is currently on vacation and on his way back,” he stated.
It should be noted that residents of Gegharkunik have blocked the Yerevan-Martuni road in protest against the new legislative changes from the State Revenue Committee, which state that those who work abroad must pay income tax in Armenia on income earned from other countries.
It is worth mentioning that the majority of foreign workers from Armenia come from the Gegharkunik region, particularly the residents of Martuni, and the prospect of paying additional taxes to the state has angered them, leading to demands for the cancellation of the legislative requirement.
Today, the State Revenue Committee issued a statement indicating that it is ready to start discussions regarding this legislative regulation.
