US Considers New Sanctions Against Russia Due to Navalny's Death

The United States is considering the possibility of imposing new sanctions against Russia in connection with the death of opposition politician Alexei Navalny in prison. This was confirmed by US President Joe Biden during a conversation with reporters at the White House, as reported by dw.com.

"We already have sanctions, but we are considering additional sanctions, yes," Biden said in response to a question from a journalist.

On February 16, the day the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service announced the news of Navalny's death, Biden stated during an unscheduled briefing that the responsibility for the opposition leader's death lies with Russian President Vladimir Putin. At the same time, reporters reminded Biden of his 2021 statement that Russia and Vladimir Putin would face "devastating consequences" in the event of Navalny's death and asked for clarification on what consequences would now follow. Joe Biden noted that he is considering "a full range of options".

Commenting on Navalny's death, the US President pointed to the threat that, in his assessment, Russia poses and called on Congress to approve the allocation of additional military aid to Ukraine.
