US Announces Major Sanctions Package Against Russia Related to Navalny's Death
The White House will announce a major sanctions package against Russia on February 23, related to the death of Alexei Navalny and the two-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine, said John Kirby, spokesman for the US National Security Council, as reported by Reuters.
"No matter what story the Russian government chooses to tell the world, it is clear that President Putin and his government are responsible for Navalny's death," Kirby stated. He added that the US demands "full transparency" from Russia regarding the circumstances surrounding Navalny's death.
According to his remarks, the sanctions aim to hold Russia accountable for what happened to Navalny and for its actions during the Ukrainian war. Kirby mentioned that the new sanctions will be based on ongoing efforts to "squeeze" the Russian economy and will include several specific restrictions related to Navalny's death, though he did not provide further details.
