Greece to Take Command of New EU Mission in the Red Sea
Greece will take command of the European Union's new naval mission in the Red Sea. This information was reported by the Spanish newspaper El País.
It is noted that the Greek commander will lead Operation Aspides, which is aimed at protecting European vessels. The mission's operational headquarters will be situated on an Italian ship.
Foreign ministers from EU member states are expected to approve the launch of the year-long operation on February 19, during which four frigates will be deployed.
European vessels will respond only to maritime attacks and will not fire towards the mainland. The EU mission will operate independently of the US-led Prosperity Guardian operation; however, there will be cooperation and information exchange between the two.
