Hermitage to Revitalize the Red Hill Archaeological Expedition
The State Hermitage will revitalize an archaeological expedition to study the Red Hill fortress in Armenia, where museum specialists have been working since the mid-20th century. According to a report by TASS, the Hermitage's Director Mikhail Piotrovsky informed journalists that this agreement was reached with representatives from Armenia's historical-archaeological Erebuni reserve-museum.
“We have already agreed with our Armenian colleagues to revive the famous Red Hill expedition, which was led by Boris Borisovich Piotrovsky (Director of the Hermitage from 1964 to 1990). A new museum is planned to be built on-site, which will be constructed on the location of the cemetery adjacent to the Teishebaini fortress. Before that, excavations will take place, and the site will be covered with glass, while the museum will be built above it. This will be undertaken by a joint Russian-Armenian expedition. Previously, one or two of our members participated in the excavations alongside Armenian teams, but now there will be a fully revived new team,” said Piotrovsky.
