OHANAVAN RESIDENT DISCOVERS MEDIEVAL ROCK-CUT TOMBS ON HIS PROPERTY
The specialists from the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports’ Department for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments, the Service for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Monuments and Historical Environment, and the Scientific Research Center for Cultural Heritage have conducted another tour of several monuments.
During the visit, they discussed and clarified the technical specifications and requirements for the competition to acquire design documentation for the restoration, reinforcement, and improvement of the royal tombs of the Artsakh Armenian kings. The ministry will announce the project competition in the coming days.
They also addressed the issue of recognizing the adjacent area of the Artsakh cultural reserve as public interest and integrating it into the reserve’s territory.
The next stop was in Ohanavan territory, in the Kasakh gorge, where one of the residents discovered a medieval rock-cut tomb while conducting earthworks on his land. The incident was recorded by the Aragatsotn regional service of the “Service for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Monuments and Historical Environment,” and the work was halted.
Discussions were held regarding the submission of the archaeological artifacts discovered during the works to the state, as well as the need for urgent excavations. In the near future, the newly discovered monument will be registered and will also receive a status as a newly discovered monument.
The specialists also toured the sites of the "Serkivil" settlement from the 10th to 15th centuries, St. Gregory the Illuminator Church, the fortress wall, and the Cyclopean fortress areas.
