Does Iran Continue to See a Threat to Syunik? A Question for the Iranian Ambassador in Armenia
Iran and Armenia can develop their relations in all areas. This was stated by Mehdi Sobhani, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Armenia, in an interview with NEWS.am.
The interview with the news outlet is as follows:
“Mr. Ambassador, in your opinion, which areas can Armenia and Iran deepen their cooperation?”
“Iran and Armenia can develop their relations in all areas. In addition to bilateral political relations, we also have bilateral cooperation in international forums, supporting each other. Over the past year, the high-level political leadership exchanges between the two countries have also increased. These visits have given a special dynamic to the relations, and we can also develop high-level political dialogue. The establishment of a consulate in Tabriz can also contribute to developing bilateral cooperation in various sectors. In any meeting where our high-ranking leaders have met, they have mutually supported political positions. Last year, we managed to extend the gas-for-electricity contract, and this was another step toward the future. We also have relations in trade, and last year we signed many important agreements in the economic sector. I am optimistic that this year we will also document a large number of successes within the framework of our cooperation.
The next session of the intergovernmental commission of the two countries is also forthcoming, which will serve as an impetus to further develop relations between the two countries. We have a very strong desire to develop bilateral cooperation.
Last year, the free trade agreement between Iran and the EAEU countries was signed. How much will this expand cooperation between Armenia and Iran?
It has a significant impact because Armenia is a platform for Iran to access the 200 million-strong Eurasian Economic market. Of course, we do not consider Armenia as a market of 3 million; instead, we see it as a platform that will help us access the Eurasian economic market.
Mr. Ambassador, despite the agreement between Iran and Azerbaijan regarding the road connecting Azerbaijan to Nakhichevan via Iranian territory, the Azerbaijani side continues to issue threats, demanding the “Zangezur corridor.” In this matter, we know Iran's position, which defends the territorial integrity of Armenia. Does Iran continue to see a threat to Syunik?
The opportunities we have provided are for all countries to develop business and trade and to be able to take advantage of these opportunities. Such connections must respect the territorial integrity, sovereignty of countries, and respect for recognized borders, and violations of international norms are unacceptable.”
