The Lowest Temperature of This Winter Recorded in Ashotzk

In January, the average monthly air temperature in the Republic was 4-6 degrees higher than the climatic norm. During the month, the highest recorded temperature in the country was +22 degrees in Kapan. The warm January was also accompanied by heavy precipitation. This was stated by Gagik Surenyan, the deputy director of the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center, during a press conference, noting that from January 1-25, an anomalously high thermal background was recorded.

“The daily average air temperature was 8-10 degrees above the climatic norm. And only after January 25, with the intrusion of polar cold air masses, the air temperature significantly decreased. Specifically, on January 31, the lowest temperature of this winter was recorded in the Ashotzk area at -32 degrees,” said Gagik Surenyan.

At the Aragats high-altitude meteorological station, located at an altitude of 3229 meters above sea level, the snow cover reached 161 cm, while in the Amberd area, it was 107 cm. The highest snow cover among populated areas was 95 cm in Jermuk.

According to Gagik Surenyan, no dangerous phenomena with agricultural significance have been recorded in December and January. Moreover, the heavy snowfall observed at the end of January had a rather positive effect, especially on the autumn-planted wheat.
