Julya

The National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia has reported a significant operation in the Syunik region, resulting in the prevention of a large-scale drug smuggling attempt from the Islamic Republic of Iran into Armenia.

According to NSS, operational measures were taken based on intelligence information. It was revealed that Armenian citizens, in coordination with an Iranian citizen, planned to illegally transport various narcotic substances into Armenia for sale on January 25 of this year. Following a series of coordinated actions, it was established that a batch of drugs was smuggled into Armenia on January 25, near the city of Meghri at the Armenian-Iranian border, with the intent to transfer it to Yerevan.

The activities of the criminal group were subsequently halted by NSS employees in Syunik. Those involved in the crime were arrested, and the vehicle used for transport was seized and brought to the regional NSS office. Relevant documents have been handed over to the Investigative Committee of Armenia’s Syunik Regional Investigation Department, where criminal proceedings have been initiated under Article 393, Part 3, Clause 2, and Article 399, Part 3, Clause 2 of the Armenian Criminal Code. An investigation is ongoing.

As a result of the operational and investigative actions, a total of approximately 13 kg of various narcotic-like substances were discovered.
