Video: Confrontation at the US-Mexico Border in Texas
A confrontation has erupted between federal and state security forces at a section of the US-Mexico border in Texas, driven by a migration crisis. In December alone, a record-breaking more than 225,000 illegal immigrants crossed the border.
In response to the significant influx of illegal migrants, Texas authorities have installed barbed wire at the border. However, this week, the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of federal authorities, allowing border patrol agents to remove the barbed wire. Following this decision, tensions have escalated sharply between Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the federal government. Texas officials have refused to comply with the ruling.
The Texas National Guard has taken control of one of the border areas near Eagle Pass, installing 48 kilometers of barbed wire and preventing federal border patrol agents from removing it. President Joe Biden's administration has stated that Texas officials are interfering with immigration and border enforcement matters that fall under federal jurisdiction.
Former President Donald Trump, known for his hardline immigration policies, has called on 'all willing states' to send members of the National Guard to Texas, as reported by The Hill. Trump stated, “In the face of this national security, public safety, and public health crisis, Texas is rightly invoking the constitutional provision regarding invasion and should receive full support to repel the invasion… We urge all willing states to send security forces to Texas to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants and to push them back across the border.”
“When I am president, on the very first day, instead of fighting against Texas, I will work hand in hand with Governor Abbott and other border states to stop the invasion, close the border, and immediately commence the biggest deportation operation in history. Those whom Biden has let in should not feel comfortable, as they are going home,” Trump emphasized.
Governor Greg Abbott has justified his decision to ignore the court ruling by criticizing Biden for not enforcing immigration laws and violating them. The Texas governor cited Texas’s constitutional right to defend against invasion, stressing the continuous flow of immigrants arriving at the southern border.
“Since Biden’s administration has essentially failed to fulfill its duty to secure the border and enforce the relevant laws, Texas is, quite simply, securing the border,” Abbott stated.
According to the BBC, governors from half of the US states, 25 Republican governors, have expressed support for Texas regarding the intensification of border resistance with the federal government. The governors have issued a joint statement in solidarity with Abbott.
