EU Agrees to Establish Military Mission in the Red Sea
The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, has announced that EU member states' ministers have approved the creation of a military mission aimed at protecting commercial ships in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks, according to Italian ANSA agency.
“We have reached a fundamental agreement to organize an EU mission in the Red Sea. Now we need to reach a consensus on when it will start,” Borrell told reporters following a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
Earlier in January, Josep Borrell announced that he had sent a proposal to the union countries regarding the establishment of a special European naval mission in the Red Sea.
Shell and liquefied natural gas exporter QatarEnergy have indefinitely suspended shipping through the Red Sea.
