UK Defence Secretary Warns of Potential Military Conflicts

The United Kingdom and its allies must prepare for potential global warfare with Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea that could begin in five years, according to the Kingdom's Defence Secretary Grant Shapps.

He stated that it is time for "all democratic nations around the world" to increase their defense spending in the face of new threats. "The era of peace dividends is over. In five years, we could face military actions on several fronts involving Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea," Shapps warned.

He pointed out that after the end of the Cold War, Russia has become a "militaristic authoritarian state." According to Shapps, in 2014, President Vladimir Putin "departed" with the annexation of Crimea, and eight years later, he decided to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, now attempting to absorb that country.

Meanwhile, China is watching the West's response, assessing whether its patience to continue assisting Ukraine will suffice, North Korea promises to expand its nuclear arsenal, and Iran is developing its own nuclear weapons, with all these countries cooperating with each other, Shapps noted.

He believes that 2024 will be a pivotal year for the entire world, excluding speculation that Ukraine's fate will be resolved during that time. "Putin thinks the West will not have enough resilience. And as a threat to him, we need to prove him wrong. If he is 'rewarded' with victory in this war, it will increase the risk of escalation. Not only because he is obsessed with the idea of restoring the Russian Empire but also because it will signal weakness to other potential aggressors," Shapps explained.

He highlighted that the current strategic competitors of NATO are "more unstable and irrational" than those during the Cold War, particularly regarding North Korea and Iran. The British minister mentioned that it is challenging to predict whether nuclear deterrence and mutually assured destruction strategies, which stopped wars in the past, will work with them.

Shapps also reminded of other destabilizing factors, such as terrorist threats, cyberattacks, electoral interference, and attempts to create energy and migration crises. He added that the UK has already begun preparing for global warfare. In 2024, the government will spend £50 billion on defense for the first time and aims to reach 2.5% of GDP for these expenditures in the future.

Additionally, the country will send 20,000 soldiers and a strike carrier group to NATO's largest drills since the Cold War, continue to develop the AUKUS underwater forces alliance with Australia and the US, and work with Italy and Japan on the development of sixth-generation fighters.

"We have gone full circle from post-war to pre-war peace. The era of idealism has been replaced by the era of hard realism. We are entering a new era and must be prepared to deter our enemies, rally our allies, and defend our nation when called upon," Shapps concluded.
