11 Dead in Rio de Janeiro Due to Floods, Landslides, and Electrocutions
Heavy rains in Rio de Janeiro have resulted in floods that have claimed the lives of 11 individuals, according to data from emergency services reported by the G1 portal. A state of emergency has been declared in the city.
From January 13 to 14, torrential rain fell in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro, leading to the inundation of major roads and paralyzing public surface transport and metro services. According to rescuers, the deaths were caused by landslides and electrocutions from broken wires in the city's electrical grid.
Eduardo Paes, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, has urged residents to refrain from leaving their homes unnecessarily until the situation stabilizes. The city’s operational center has issued a third-level alert, out of a possible five, for the population.
