Video: Elections in Taiwan, Results So Far
Taiwan is holding presidential elections today. According to several media outlets, the results will shape the development of relations with China.
Three candidates are competing for the presidency: Lai Ching-te from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, Hou You-ih from the Kuomintang, and Ko Wen-je from the Taiwan People's Party, which was founded in 2019. This information comes from Radio Free Europe.
Reports indicate that the United States has promised support to any winner. “Regardless of who is elected, our policy toward Taiwan will remain unchanged, and our strong unofficial relations will also remain,” a source from the U.S. presidential administration told Reuters.
Voting for the island's leadership has now concluded. A video shows dozens of people with flags gathered in the center of the capital, Taipei.
Presidential candidate Hou You-ih has conceded defeat in the Taiwan executive leadership elections. “I have disappointed everyone; I am here to express my deep regret. Please forgive me,” Hou said in a speech before his supporters.
As of 14:57 Moscow time (15:57 Yerevan time), Hou You-ih is trailing Lai Ching-te from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. The counting of votes continues, with Lai Ching-te and Taiwan People's Party President Ko Wen-je still in contention.
