Bryusov State University to Merge with Pedagogical University; Timeline Revealed

According to the "Zhoghovurd" newspaper, Bryusov State University is set to merge with the Pedagogical University in February. The struggle has ended as the opposing rector has been neutralized and the opponents are isolated.

The background of the event is as follows: On October 12, 2022, it was announced that Bryusov State University would merge with two other institutions—the State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports of Armenia and the Pedagogical University—during the government’s initiative for university consolidation. Students rallied, held strikes, and rector Karine Harutyunyan fought alongside the students, but after the uproar, tensions calmed, yet the government maintained its grip over the universities.

The "Zhoghovurd" newspaper reached out to Bryusov University rector David Gyurjinyan, but he refrained from making any comment, stating it was not a suitable time to talk.

The newspaper also contacted the Higher Education and Science Committee, which oversees matters related to higher education. The committee responded, stating, “On July 17, 2023, the proposal regarding the consolidation of universities was made, and universities were given until February 15, 2024—approximately six months—to present their proposals regarding the consolidation process. Currently, there has been no proposal from any university regarding your mentioned issue, but there is definitely an agenda for university consolidation. Perhaps by the end of the year, there will be substantive discussions and projects, but at this moment, there are none.”
