Possible Relocation of Tennis Courts to a More Harmonious Environment According to Kostanyan
The press secretary of Yerevan’s mayor, Hayk Kostanyan, addressed the planned work in the 4th section of the Circular Park, which was discussed yesterday at the city hall’s operational meeting.
“I would like to inform you about the planned works in the 4th section of Circular Park, which has gained significant public attention. The main purpose of Circular Park is to purify the city’s air, create a healthy microclimate, and serve as a place for relaxation for people. In the 1990s, many trees in the park were cut down. In the 2000s, some areas of the park were leased out, resulting in irregular constructions, as green spaces turned into cafes. Currently, in the 4th section of Circular Park, from Sayat Nova Street to Nalbandyan Street, public use areas and green spaces have also diminished.
Various inappropriate constructions have been established in the area over different periods, creating densely occupied zones that hinder the creation of a well-designed park. Under these conditions, it is impossible to manage the park's usage forms effectively and ensure the ecosystem's stability. The park has lost its intended purpose.
It is impossible to organize citizens' leisure in the mentioned section of the park without major renovations to the park's area.
Discussions regarding the reconstruction of the 4th section of Circular Park are currently underway, including proposals to create well-designed tree-lined paths and flower-decorated walkways, pedestrian movement networks with the shortest distance to destinations, resting platforms along them, water features (fountains, flat structures, sports zones), as well as other facilities for visitor service and park maintenance, cycling paths, stairs, ramps, and other landscaping elements.
In order to enable efficient use of the park and expand year-round activities under different weather conditions, small enclosed structures will be created or reconstructed in the park as well (food service point, cafe, non-main structures for family recreation and entertainment, souvenir shop, and a suitable environment for organizing public events, concerts, and cultural programs).
Regarding the widely discussed tennis courts in the 4th section of Circular Park, I inform you that the issue is under consideration; there is no intention to demolish them. However, the possibility of relocating the tennis courts to a more harmonious environment cannot be ruled out.
The Chess House building is to be preserved, like all structures recognized as cultural monuments. Additionally, the adjacent areas will be improved and visually enhanced. This is the complete update on the topic at the moment, and in the future, the Yerevan municipality will provide additional information through its official channels.
