We Demand a New Oath Ceremony for the Mayor of Yerevan: "Mother Armenia"
The "Mother Armenia" faction of the Yerevan City Council is challenging the legality of Mayor Tigran Avinyan's assuming office through judicial means.
"This assumption of powers took place in the absence of a quorum in the council. We demand the organization of a new oath ceremony that complies with the letter and spirit of the law. Otherwise, Avinyan and indeed the entire city administration could find themselves operating outside the law, with all the consequences that entails," wrote Samvel Hakobyan, a member of the "Mother Armenia" faction, on his Facebook page.
He noted that the Administrative Court of Armenia had previously rejected a petition he submitted on the same topic in 2023 on formal grounds. That ruling has been appealed to the Court of Appeals of Armenia, which has decided that the application challenging the mayor's assumption of powers should be accepted for review.
"The court has determined that we are right, while the Administrative Court was wrong. Therefore, the issue of the illegal assumption of powers by Tigran Avinyan is not yet closed. We will utilize all legal and political tools to counter these violations," wrote the council member.
According to him, if the court orders Tigran Avinyan to convene a new session for assuming powers, all of his decisions and orders signed until that time, including the implementation of council decisions, should be deemed invalid.
