This is a historic opportunity: Zelensky
Frozen Russian assets abroad total about $300 billion, and they should be used to support Ukraine. This was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on his X page.
"This is a historic opportunity to make the terrorist state pay for its terrorism. The Russian elite and leadership are indifferent to human lives, but they are not indifferent to money. The loss of assets will be their most painful loss. They will feel the true power of the international community and see that the world is stronger against terrorism," the statement reads.
In the president's opinion, the decision to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine would be a completely fair and legal response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine. "It would send the right signal to all potential aggressors in the world: attacking another state does not bring dividends, the aggressor ultimately has to pay. I urge partners to swiftly move towards creating the appropriate legal framework. This year we must achieve tangible progress regarding the use of Russian frozen assets," the head of state stated.
