South Korea Responds to North Korea's Provocation
The South Korean military has conducted exercises in the Yellow Sea in response to the artillery shelling by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) near the waters around the islands of Yeonpyeongdo and Baengnyeongdo. This information has been reported by the local Yonhap news agency.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Republic of Korea, this marks the first occasion since the signing of the inter-Korean military agreement on September 19, 2018, that marine units stationed on the northwestern islands have conducted live-fire exercises.
It was previously reported that South Korea announced an evacuation from Yeonpyeongdo Island in the Yellow Sea due to provocations from the DPRK. Today, North Korean military forces fired over 200 rounds of coastal artillery in the vicinity of the South Korean islands of Baengnyeongdo and Yeonpyeongdo within a span of two hours. No damage has been reported on the South Korean side, as the shells landed within North Korean territory.
