Azerbaijan is Negotiating in Good Faith with Armenia: Hajiyev
Significant progress has been made regarding the text of the peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia, yet several unresolved issues remain. This was stated by Hikmet Hajiyev, head of the foreign policy department of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration, in an interview with the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung. Azerbaijani media outlets have reported this information.
“Since the end of the second Karabakh war in 2020, Azerbaijan has initiated peace talks with Armenia, presenting five main principles that correspond to well-known norms of international law. These include mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual recognition of the absence of territorial claims against each other, and the establishment of diplomatic relations. Azerbaijan has been negotiating in good faith with Armenia on various platforms to achieve the long-awaited peace in the region. We truly believe that there is a historic opportunity to sign a peace treaty, and we must not miss this chance. Significant progress has been made on the text of the peace treaty; however, there are still a few unresolved issues,” he stated.
According to Hajiyev, recently both countries surprised the world with a positive agenda: “I mean the symbolic joint statement from the administrations of the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia on December 7, which resulted in the release of 34 soldiers as part of a mutual exchange deal. Additionally, Azerbaijan has supported Armenia’s candidacy for membership in the Bureau of the Eastern Europe Group for the climate conference, while Armenia has supported Azerbaijan’s candidacy to host the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP). This shows that Azerbaijan and Armenia are capable of conducting direct bilateral negotiations without intermediaries,” he added.
