Inmate Kills Cellmate Accused of Father's Murder

In the framework of the criminal case investigated by the Regional Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Armenia in Armavir, the circumstances surrounding the murder of an inmate at the 'Armavir' penitentiary have been clarified through necessary investigative and procedural actions.

Specifically, the investigation established that the inmate, who was serving his sentence in the same cell as A.Y., who was under public prosecution for the murder of his father, had subjected A.Y. to violence on a regular basis for a prolonged period of time.

According to obtained factual data, on October 4, 2021, the aforementioned inmate demanded from A.Y. that in the event of an extension of the detention period, they not return to their cell, threatening that otherwise it would go badly for A.Y., as he did not want to share a cell with someone accused of killing his own father and with someone who did not adhere to the established behavioral norms in the cell.

However, A.Y. refused to go to court and was returned to his cell. Seeing that A.Y. was unwilling to be transferred to another cell, the aforementioned inmate, with the intent of punishing A.Y., from October 2022, frequently assaulted A.Y. with various hits using hands and feet to different parts of his body, tied his feet, and tightened his neck. Using a sharp object or tool not established by the investigation, he inflicted cuts, causing the victim severe physical pain and mental suffering. During this time, numerous bodily injuries of various types and degrees of severity appeared on the victim's body, as a result of which A.Y. died on the night of October 12-13, 2022, around 23:15.

According to the forensic medical examination, the victim's death resulted from traumatic-hemorrhagic shock due to blunt closed chest injuries, which were in direct causal connection with the death.

Based on sufficient evidence, the inmate has been charged under Article 155 (1) of the Criminal Code of Armenia (murder), Article 166 (1)(1) (causing grievous bodily harm dangerous to life), and Article 196 (1) (causing physical severe pain or mental severe suffering). The pre-trial investigation has been completed, and the materials of the case have been sent to the court with a bill of indictment.
