VIDEO: Boycott Needed to Prevent Bill That Will Pocket the Last Penny of Yerevan Residents, Says Sukiasyan

The Yerevan City Council's meeting today serves as a litmus test, clarifying political realities even further. Manuk Sukiasyan, the leader of the City Council's “Mother Armenia” faction, made this statement during a rally outside the city hall ahead of the council meeting.

He noted that the aim is to draw the attention of Yerevan residents to today's council meeting, which includes a draft regarding changes in local taxes and fees. This proposal would increase the cost of parking in the city center from 12,000 drams to 160,000 drams.

“At this moment, we are conducting a symbolic action. A red dotted line is being placed at the entrance to symbolize the expected financial influx into the city’s budget through the pockets of Yerevan residents. Currently, we have a red line—on one side is the Yerevan resident, and on the inside is the city authority, which is trying to fill the city budget by calculating every resident's income, aiming to collect funds for bonuses and available money from purchases by one individual,” he stated.

According to him, out of 65 members of the Yerevan City Council, 32 are part of the ruling coalition, while 31 are not associated with the coalition.

“To prevent the bill that will pocket the last penny of Yerevan residents from passing, a boycott is necessary, the meeting must be thwarted, and the social burden on residents should not increase starting January 1,” Sukiasyan emphasized.
