Zakhrova: He Was Elected Solely Because He Spoke About Peace

During the elections in Ukraine, Zelensky supported the country’s bilingualism, but he has now "forgotten" Russian in order to align with Ukrainian nationalists, declared Maria Zakharova, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, during a broadcast on Sputnik.

Recently, a journalist asked Zelensky a question in Russian during a press conference, and he began to listen to the Ukrainian translator. Zelensky responded in Ukrainian.

"This is intended for those whose nationalism has pushed aside everything else—morality, decency, even pragmatism," said the diplomat.

According to her, the nationalism ingrained in the consciousness of Ukrainian citizens for decades has clouded people's judgment. Zelensky’s actions aim to display the unity of those who are "infected with nationalism." Zakharova reminded that during his election campaign, which brought Zelensky to power, he presented himself as a unifier of the country and supported the rights of Russian-speaking residents to speak in their language. This synthesis was the essence of his program.

The diplomat noted that this was the very reason Zelensky was elected. "Only because he spoke about peace and because he spoke about the Russian language, that he is Russian-speaking and that he knows Ukraine from the inside," Zakharova stated.
