Ship Capsizes Off Libya's Coast, Over 60 Migrants Drown
A ship carrying migrants bound for Europe has capsized off the coast of Libya, resulting in the deaths of more than 60 individuals, including women and children, according to reports by AP citing the UN migration agency.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that the vessel was transporting 86 migrants when it encountered rough seas near the coastal town of Zuwara in western Libya, with survivors reporting that 61 migrants drowned.
“The Central Mediterranean remains one of the world’s deadliest migration routes,” the UN migration agency declared.
In recent years, Libya has become a major transit point for migrants fleeing wars and poverty in Africa and the Middle East.
