VIDEO: Scandal in Turkish Football as Club President Assaults Referee on Field
All matches in the Turkish national football league have been postponed following an assault on a referee. The incident occurred on Monday evening during the match between Ankaragücü and Rizespor, which ended in a 1:1 draw.
At the end of the game, the president of Ankaragücü, Faruk Koca, rushed onto the field and punched referee Halil Melih in the face. As the referee fell onto the turf, he was then kicked by those present.
Koca and two others have been arrested and charged with insulting a public servant. The president of the Turkish Football Federation called the attack "inhumane" and assured that the perpetrators would be held accountable. “This attack is very painful and shameful for Turkish football. Turkish football does not deserve this. Enough is enough,” he wrote.
The club has apologized to the entire sports community for the incident. The referee has been hospitalized with a minor facial bone fracture, and the Interior Minister visited him in the hospital. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemned the attack over the phone and wished a speedy recovery to the referee.
