EU Diplomat Arrested in Iran Faces Death Penalty
Iran has accused a Swedish diplomat working for the European Union, who is currently imprisoned in Tehran, of espionage in favor of Israel and corruption over a period of more than 600 days. These charges carry the death penalty, reports The Guardian.
“Johan Floderus is accused of orchestrating extensive measures against the nation’s security, engaging in wide-ranging espionage cooperation with the Zionist regime, and corruption on Earth,” the Iranian judicial authority’s media outlet, Mizan Online, stated.
The 33-year-old Floderus was arrested on April 17, 2022, at Tehran International Airport. Sweden, which employs him through the EU’s diplomatic service, has confirmed that he is being held in Tehran’s Evin prison. His arrest coincided with the trial of Iranian citizen Hamid Nouri in Sweden, who was involved in the mass execution of dissidents in Tehran in 1988.
