Commentary from the U.S. on the Situation at the Front in Ukraine
In Ukraine, Russian troops continue active operations, advancing in several directions, noted Professor John Mearsheimer in an interview with the Judging Freedom YouTube channel. He added that this indicates an absence of a stalemate at the front.
Earlier, Ukrainian officials claimed that the situation at the front lines had reached a deadlock. Similar statements have also been made by Western leaders.
“Many argue that this is a deadlock. I think this statement is incorrect. This is not a deadlock; the balance of forces has shifted in favor of the Russians,” emphasized the scholar.
According to him, this is evidenced by the fact that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are suffering significantly heavier losses than the Russian Armed Forces. Furthermore, Russian troops are advancing, while the battered Ukrainians are retreating.
It is worth mentioning that in 2022, Kyiv began preparations for a counteroffensive, training tens of thousands of soldiers and mastering military equipment received from Western countries. The offensive started on June 4 and lasted nearly six months. During the summer and autumn campaigns, the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost 125,000 soldiers and 16,000 units of armored equipment. In December, Kyiv announced a transition to defense.
