Gradual Transition to Electric and Hydrogen Vehicles Necessary, President
Armenia plans to increase the share of alternative energy in its energy system to 60% by 2040. This was announced by Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan in an interview with Armenpress.
The president emphasized that Armenia is committed to international agreements aimed at combating climate change that the country has signed over the years. Khachaturyan stated that, like other countries, Armenia has obligations to reduce and limit emissions and to increase the share of alternative energy sources.
“Recently, there was a change in our energy strategy, and we plan to increase the share of solar energy in our energy system to 15% by 2030. We consider it realistic to achieve this by 2030,” said Khachaturyan, noting that the current share of solar energy in Armenia's energy system is 5%.
The president detailed that the aim by 2040 is to have the overall share of alternative energy (hydropower, wind and solar energy, nuclear power) in Armenia’s energy system reach 60%.
Vahagn Khachaturyan stressed the importance of moving away from the use of fossil fuels and gradually transitioning to vehicles powered by alternative energy, clarifying that this primarily refers to electric vehicles or, should technological solutions be found, hydrogen-powered vehicles.
The application of new technologies is another crucial issue in this process. According to the president, the aforementioned commitments are set for all countries on a global scale, and Armenia cannot remain unaffected by them.
