What to Expect from Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plants: UN Statement
The Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Miroslav Jenca, stated during a UN Security Council meeting that all Ukrainian nuclear power plants are currently at risk. As reported by RIA Novosti, he noted that as long as the conflict continues, all Ukrainian nuclear facilities remain under threat.
Previously, the IAEA reported a complete shutdown at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, located in a dangerous area near the front lines. This shutdown has been the eighth occurrence since the beginning of the conflict.
According to the Assistant Secretary-General, the IAEA team reported several explosions near the Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant in western Ukraine, although the plant itself was not damaged. Jenca expressed that this incident highlights the dangers of Ukrainian nuclear facilities, even those located far from active combat zones.
“All nuclear facilities must be able to operate in a safe environment and must be protected to avoid potentially devastating consequences,” he emphasized.
