Amid Sanctions, EU Imports Nuclear Fuel from Russia

European Union countries have increased their imports of nuclear fuel from Russia in 2023, according to a report by Reuters. Data from the European Atomic Energy Agency indicates that Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, and Slovakia have purchased 22% more enriched nuclear fuel from the Russian Federation this year compared to the previous year.

Earlier reports highlighted that Hungary's position led to the removal of nuclear energy from the twelfth package of sanctions against Russia. Additionally, Budapest has advocated for the cessation of funding to Ukraine in favor of establishing a special fund to aid Kyiv, allowing EU countries to contribute from their own budgets.
