Georgia Constructs the Country's Longest Tunnel

A new tunnel has been constructed parallel to the existing tunnel of the Rikoti Road, which is part of the East-West International Highway (E60), reports Alik Media.

The length of the new tunnel on the Chumateleti-Khevi section is 1,800 meters, making it, as of today, the longest tunnel in the country, according to the National Roads Authority.

Construction work continues on the main road for a stretch of 81 km.

In total, the Rikoti project foresees the construction of 51 tunnels and 97 bridges; to date, 48 tunnels have been crossed and 83 bridges have been built.

The construction of the East-West Highway is being carried out with the support of international financial institutions, including the European Investment Bank (EIB), the World Bank (WB), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The total cost of the construction works amounts to up to 2.6 billion lari. The project is expected to be completed in 2024.
