Yerevan's Bus Fleet to Be Augmented by 30 More Buses
The bus fleet of Yerevan will be augmented by an additional 30 buses. In an interview with Armenpress, the Head of the Transport Department of Yerevan Municipality, Vazgen Harutyunyan, announced this news.
He mentioned that the company that has already supplied 150 buses of the ‘Zhong Tong’ brand has agreed, after negotiations, to deliver 30 new buses at the same contract price. This means that another 30 buses will be supplied without any change in the current price.
Vazgen Harutyunyan reported that this batch of buses has left China and is currently en route. It is expected that the buses will arrive in Armenia by February.
“A new tender is also planned to acquire an additional 171 units of new buses, each 8.5 meters in length. We expect the tender to take place, and we will have a winning participant. In that case, the delivery period is set for 6 months, and we will have an additional 171 buses by August 2024,” Harutyunyan added.
The mentioned fleet is planned to be used on existing routes. Specifically, the old violet buses currently in use will be replaced. A portion of the newly acquired fleet will upgrade the routes, enhancing the quality of service.
“Moreover, there are areas in Yerevan where accessibility to transport is at a very low level. There are plans to organize 1-2 additional routes to increase coverage. I should mention that negotiations are currently underway with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to attract financial resources. If positive results are achieved, there are plans to acquire 259 new buses that are 18 meters long. The timelines for this are not clear yet, but work is actively underway,” said Vazgen Harutyunyan.
