Zakharova Announces Who Will Monitor the Route Between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan

The spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, has stated that a trilateral working group consisting of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan is engaged in unblocking economic and transport communications in the region. This process plays a crucial role in the normalization of relations between Baku and Yerevan and contributes to the stabilization of the entire South Caucasus transit-logistics potential.

“The group has already held 12 meetings, and a tremendous amount of work has been done to assess the current state of regional logistics infrastructure, as well as selecting optimal projects for railway and automobile communications. We have managed to come very close to a package solution that is beneficial for all parties,” Zakharova noted.

The Russian Foreign Ministry representative expressed regret that a definitive resolution on these issues has not yet been achieved. According to her, some parties simply lack the political will to accomplish this, and it is not Russia.

Regarding the establishment of a special subdivision within Armenia's National Security Service for the protection of communications, she clarified that “in accordance with the mentioned trilateral agreements, the transport communication control between Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic will be undertaken by the Russian Federal Security Service's Border Guard.”

It is worth recalling that earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the establishment of a security-providing unit for the “Peace Crossroads” project. This unit has been operational since November 1. According to the Prime Minister, the function of this unit within the NSS should be to ensure the safety of the transit of goods, cargo, vehicles, and people across the regional and international roads, railways, gas pipelines, cables, and power transmission lines passing through Armenia.
