Humanitarian Personnel Cannot Operate Under These Conditions: Red Cross Convoy Comes Under Fire
A convoy of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), consisting of five trucks loaded with humanitarian aid and two passenger vehicles, came under fire in Gaza City, as reported by the ICRC.
"The International Committee of the Red Cross is deeply concerned that on Tuesday, its humanitarian convoy in Gaza City was subjected to gunfire. The ICRC reminds the parties involved in the conflict of their obligations under international humanitarian law to always respect and protect those engaged in humanitarian work," stated the ICRC’s press release.
It was reported that the convoy was attacked while en route to deliver medical supplies to hospitals in Gaza, including Al-Quds Hospital. Two of the trucks were damaged, and one driver sustained minor injuries. Following the incident, the convoy changed its route and delivered humanitarian assistance to Al-Shifa Hospital.
According to William Shomburg, head of the ICRC delegation in Gaza, “these are not conditions under which humanitarian personnel can operate.” He added, “We are here to provide urgent assistance to civilians in need. According to humanitarian law, ensuring that vital assistance reaches healthcare facilities is a legal responsibility.”
