Hamas Leaders' Exit from Gaza in Exchange for Hostages: Israel in Discussion

Israel is discussing the possibility of allowing leaders of the Hamas movement, including its military wing, to leave the Gaza Strip freely in exchange for the release of all hostages. This move could simultaneously lead to a swift end to the war while declaring that the stated objectives of destroying the group's infrastructure within the enclave have been achieved. This information was reported by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, as informed by RIA Novosti.

The publication notes that the complete physical destruction of all Hamas personnel and its infrastructure in the Gaza Strip will take years within the current military campaign and, most importantly, will result in significant losses.

“For this reason, ideas are circulating in Israel and the international community that could shorten this process and allow for Hamas's surrender in the Gaza Strip as soon as possible. Interested parties are considering the possibility of members of Hamas's military wing, including its leaders, leaving the Gaza Strip with Israel's consent, who could preserve their lives in exchange for the release of all hostages,” the newspaper writes.

The author of the article draws a parallel to the “1982 Beirut model,” when members of the Palestine Liberation Organization were able to evacuate from besieged Beirut to Tunisia under the leadership of Yasser Arafat.

According to the publication, this topic has been frequently discussed in the press recently, as well as during various meetings attended by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The author claims that Netanyahu has shown great interest in this subject and has requested additional materials.

At the same time, the newspaper points out that this idea has problematic aspects, as achieving Israel's declared war aims involves not only the removal of Hamas leadership but also the eradication of the activities of thousands of active movement members and its military infrastructure, including all tunnels, bunkers, missile production facilities, and more.
