Guterres: Hamas Attack on Israel Did Not Happen Without Reason

The attack by Hamas on Israel did not occur without reason; the Palestinian people have been under occupation for 56 years. This was stated by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres at a UN Security Council meeting, as reported by RIA Novosti.

“It is also important to acknowledge that the attacks by Hamas have not taken place in a vacuum. The Palestinian people have been subjected to a suffocating occupation for 56 years. They have witnessed their lands being systematically engulfed by settlements and subjected to violence, their economy strangled, their people displaced, and their homes destroyed. Hopes for a political resolution to their dire situation are fading,” Guterres said.

Moreover, he emphasized that the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the horrific attacks by Hamas. At the same time, Guterres noted that the Hamas attack cannot serve as a pretext for the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.
