If Azerbaijan Does Not Stop Its Aggressive Provocative Policy, Sanctions Will Be Imposed, Currently Under Development: Roth
If Azerbaijan does not cease its aggressive provocative policy, sanctions will be imposed. This was stated today at a press conference in Yerevan by Michael Roth, Chairman of the Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs of Germany.
The German MP described his visit as a "message of support to Armenia" and a warning to Azerbaijan's authoritarian regime that military threats will not be tolerated in Europe.
"The use of military force against Nagorno-Karabakh is a gross violation of international law, and we strongly condemn such behavior. The policy of equating Armenia's young democracy with Azerbaijan's autocracy has failed. This means that the policy needs to be changed, and a clear stance should be adopted. If Azerbaijan does not stop its aggressive provocative policy, sanctions will be imposed. They are currently in the development phase," Roth stated.
He expressed support for expanding the EU mission in Armenia to enhance the security of the population.
Responding to a question about sanctions against Baku, Roth clarified that there is currently no draft on this matter, but it is possible to discuss reducing the volumes of cooperation in the energy sector.
"Authoritarian states understand one language, so they must know what the consequences of military actions will be if they take such steps," the parliamentarian said.
According to Roth, Azerbaijan has already lost trust and is not considered a reliable partner by the international community. At the same time, Roth assured that the EU will do everything possible to continue negotiations and achieve stable peace.
He admitted that in recent months, Armenian partners have spoken about the potential for military developments of events, but these concerns have not been heard in European capitals.
Regarding possible sanctions, the parliamentarian stated that they could be adopted at the EU level; however, unfortunately, there is no consensus on this issue.
It is noteworthy that earlier, Michael Roth discussed the necessity of imposing possible sanctions against Azerbaijan with the President of the National Assembly of Armenia, Alen Simonyan.
