My Child Decided to Continue Education Abroad; This Right Cannot Be Disputed - Minister of Education

During a briefing with journalists, Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan addressed the issue of accommodating children displaced from Artsakh in schools and kindergartens in Armenia, emphasizing that efforts are being made to find long-term solutions.

“First and foremost, children are placed in schools where there are licensed vacancies, and both the municipal education department and regional administrations are aware of this,” she said. The minister noted that there are also cases where children are accepted into schools regardless of whether there are available spots or not.

Andreasyan also mentioned that the situation in kindergartens is different, as there are 8,000 children in Yerevan waiting for admission, which creates challenges in accommodating displaced children in these facilities.

Journalists asked Andreasyan whether any of her children were receiving education abroad and whether the Armenian educational system is inferior in quality. In response, the minister stated, “I believe that the right to my children’s education and personal decisions cannot be disputed. My children have studied here in public schools; currently, one of my children has entered higher education and, by personal decision, has chosen the university where they are continuing their education. That university is not located in Armenia, and I consider that you are entering a personal domain where you have no rights.”

“My children, like those of any citizen of our country, are free to decide where they want to continue their education, and no one has said that my children should be subject to any discriminatory approach or be limited in their freedom of choice simply because their mother holds a position,” she added.
