US in Unfavorable Position: Suren Surenyants on Leak Regarding War Threat
The United States finds itself in a less than favorable situation following a leak from an American publication regarding the possibility of an Azerbaijani attack on Armenia. Suren Surenyants, leader of the Democratic Alternative party and a political analyst, shared this perspective in an interview with Sputnik Armenia, commenting on information published in Politico.
On October 14, Politico reported, citing anonymous sources, that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a group of lawmakers that Washington does not rule out the possibility of Azerbaijan’s imminent invasion of Armenia in the coming weeks. The next day, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that the information in the article was incorrect and did not reflect what Blinken had conveyed to lawmakers.
Surenyants remarked, “If an attack were to occur, it would turn out that the U.S. was aware of it and, having exclusive leverage over Baku, did not prevent it.” He does not consider the statement issued by the U.S. State Department to be a denial.
According to him, there is no denial regarding the concern that an attack on Armenia may occur. “The State Department's statement says that incorrect information was reported. It does not specify what information was incorrect. I do not see a substantive denial. Rather, I see discomfort related to the fact that there was a leak from discussions that took place through diplomatic channels,” Surenyants noted.
He did not rule out the possibility that the leak through the press may not have been accidental, suggesting that the United States might be attempting to deter an Azerbaijani attack or exert pressure on Armenia to compel concessions. Surenyants also found it difficult to predict whether Washington would take specific actions to prevent potential military aggression from Azerbaijan.
