Creating the Meghri Route Will Connect Azerbaijan's Main Territory With Nakhchivan, Says Galuzin

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Galuzin has commented on the issue of unblocking Armenian-Azerbaijani transportation and economic ties. "Negotiations on this issue have been ongoing at the level of deputy prime ministers for three years now. Is there any progress in this direction?" a journalist inquired.

"On June 2 of this year, when the last meeting of the trilateral working group took place, the parties recorded significant progress in the direction of unblocking transportation communications. The unblocking of transportation communications between Armenia and Azerbaijan, specifically the creation of the Meghri route, will connect Azerbaijan's main territory with Nakhchivan. After all, we are talking about a railway passing through the territory of Armenia, so I reserve the right to use the name of the Meghri route. Yes, in Azerbaijan, it is referred to as the Zangezur Corridor. Let’s just say that this formulation is convenient for everyone. We are actively assisting our Azerbaijani and Armenian partners in reaching an agreement.

We believe that this agreement will be a very important factor for the overall stabilization of the South Caucasus. It will contribute to the economic development of all states in the South Caucasus since, in this case, Armenia will have the opportunity to become a transportation and logistics hub, strengthening and expanding its transportation links with Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Russia. Azerbaijan will have the chance to maintain smooth and rhythmic transportation connections between the two parts of the country. The overall stabilization of the situation in the South Caucasus will serve to strengthen the foundations of trust between Armenia and Azerbaijan for the future. Thus, we are determined to continue promoting these consultations within the framework of the trilateral working group," said Galuzin.
