Azerbaijan Begins Establishment of Corridor to Nakhchivan via Iran

Azerbaijan has practically initiated the creation of a corridor to Nakhchivan through Iran. On October 6, the construction of a road bridge and border-customs infrastructure between Azerbaijan and Iran took place in the territory of Agband village in the Zangilan region (occupied Kovsakan area), reports Interfax.

According to the Azerbaijani state agency "AzerTaj," the newly established facilities will serve to increase transit freight traffic across the countries and facilitate entry and exit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

The event was attended by Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev and Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mehrdad Bazrpash.

The construction has commenced in line with a memorandum of understanding between the governments of Azerbaijan and Iran to create new communication links between Azerbaijan’s Eastern Zangezur Economic Region and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic via Iranian territory.

Mustafayev stated that the connection to Nakhchivan will be established through bridges that will be constructed near the Agband village of Zangilan region and in the Nakhchivan territory. A project for the bridge has been prepared, and restoration work has been carried out on the banks of the Aras River, returning the river to its course, he added.

In addition to the highway, a railway bridge is also planned to be built in this section. All work is expected to be completed within a year, he emphasized.

It is anticipated that once the corridor is constructed, 1,100 vehicles, 30 buses, and 15,000 people will pass through the state border checkpoint daily.
