Trump Raises $45 Million in Campaign Thanks to Scandals, Bloomberg Reports
Former US President Donald Trump raised over $45.5 million in the third quarter of 2023 during his campaign, largely due to scandals related to the charges brought against him, according to Bloomberg.
On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, temporarily halting Congress's proceedings. After the rioters were expelled from the building, Congress members certified Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election. Subsequently, hundreds were arrested by law enforcement on charges related to their involvement in the riot. Trump faced four charges including 'conspiracy to defraud the United States,' 'conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding,' 'obstruction and attempted obstruction of an official proceeding,' and 'conspiracy against rights.' The former president has pleaded not guilty in court.
“Trump has leveraged his numerous legal issues to encourage donors to contribute to his campaign,” the publication noted.
According to Bloomberg, Trump has already collected over $45.5 million, surpassing all other candidates for the Republican nomination for president. The political figure's successful campaign has been bolstered by the four charges against him and his mugshot taken in Fulton County.
Ten percent of the funds raised goes to Trump's Save America committee, while 90 percent is allocated for campaign financing. Consequently, the former president currently has $37.5 million in cash, the agency reported.
As stated by CNN, the amount collected by Trump's team exceeded the second quarter total ($35 million) by $10.5 million for this year’s third quarter.
Trump is the first president in U.S. history to have a mugshot taken for a police record. The photo was taken when he turned himself in at the Fulton jail, where he faces allegations of interfering in the Georgia elections. Many American media outlets have noted that the charges against Trump further solidify his support among voters.
The next U.S. presidential election is scheduled for November 2024.
