Democrats Seek to Remove Republican Speaker in U.S. House of Representatives
Congressman Matt Gaetz introduced a resolution on Monday calling for a vote to remove Kevin McCarthy from the speakership, according to American media reports. The resolution titled "Declaring the Speakership Vacancy" is privileged, meaning it takes precedence over other House matters.
According to the rules of the House of Representatives, privileged questions must be heard within two legislative days. Given the slim majority of Republicans in the House, Democrats must decide whether to vote in favor of removing McCarthy or supporting him.
Gaetz had previously stated that he intended to attempt to remove Speaker McCarthy this week. “I am going to introduce a motion to remove Speaker McCarthy this week... I believe we need to move forward with new leadership that is trustworthy,” he said on CNN. He further noted that McCarthy can only remain in his position if Democrats support him.
