Thai Prime Minister Calls for Ban on Cannabis Use for Recreational Purposes
Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has called for a ban on the use of cannabis for recreational purposes. He made this statement to reporters, emphasizing that his government supports the use of marijuana only for medical purposes.
“The policy regarding marijuana will pertain to its use for medical purposes. As for recreational use, I do not agree with that,” he was quoted as saying by the Bangkok Post.
It is anticipated that marijuana production in Thailand will reach $1.2 billion in the coming years, with thousands of enterprises emerging following its legalization in 2022, focusing on the cultivation of cannabis containing cannabinoids.
In 2018, Thailand legalized marijuana for medical use. Growing cannabis for personal use became legal in June 2022. However, smoking marijuana in public places remains prohibited in Thailand. Those who violate the law may face fines of up to 25,000 baht (approximately $700) and up to three months in prison.
