The Process of Impeachment of the President of Georgia Has Begun
The Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules has verified the authenticity of the signatures of the majority of deputies required to initiate the impeachment procedure against Georgia's President Salome Zurabishvili. The ruling party, "Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia," announced the start of the impeachment process after the president embarked on a foreign trip on August 31 without government approval.
The party stated that Zurabishvili is acting in conjunction with the "radical opposition" and is merely obstructing Georgia's European integration, while the presidential administration has claimed the opposite.
"The decision to initiate the impeachment process has been made because the president is grossly violating the Constitution," said Irakli Kadagishvili, the head of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules and a member of the "Georgian Dream" party.
A total of 80 signatures have been collected from the parliamentary majority. If the Constitutional Court confirms the president's constitutional violations, the parliament will review the court's conclusion within 10 days. Following that, a decision will need to be made within 30 days regarding whether to put the issue to a vote.
