Ministry of Education and Science on the Death of the ‘King of Rings’

The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Republic of Armenia expresses deep sorrow over the passing of Albert Azaryan on September 5. Azaryan, a three-time Olympic champion, four-time world champion, and two-time European champion, is recognized as one of the best Armenian athletes of the 20th century. He was 94 years old.

Albert Azaryan was born in 1929 in Gandzak to a family of artisans. In 1939, his family moved to Vanadzor and later relocated to Yerevan in 1947. He was a distinguished master of sports of the USSR (1954), an honored coach of the Armenian SSR, and a respected figure in physical culture and sports (1967).

According to the International Gymnastics Federation's certification, the complex of exercises performed by him on the rings has officially been named the “Azaryan Cross.”

The Ministry expresses its condolences to Albert Azaryan’s family, relatives, and representatives of the sports community. Additional information will be provided regarding the memorial service and burial of Albert Azaryan.
