EU Mission Reports on Armenian-Azerbaijani Border Tensions to Brussels
The European Union observation mission is closely monitoring the recent rise in tensions and exchanges of fire along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. This was announced by the EU mission on its microblog.
It was reported that the Azerbaijani Armed Forces began intense shelling towards Armenian positions located in the Sotk and Norabak communities of the Gegharkunik region starting from 07:50 on September 1. Azerbaijan has also utilized mortars and drones. The Armenian side has reported 3 fatalities and 2 injuries.
“Our patrols are constantly monitoring the border areas and conflict zones to report on military activities and the maintenance of security,” the mission's statement said.
The mission also noted that they have already reported their ongoing monitoring activities to Brussels.
It is worth mentioning that since February 20, a 100-person strong European mission has been deployed in Armenia with a two-year mandate. Although the EU mission is considered civilian, 50 of its members are gendarmes.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously commented on the start of the EU's new mediating mission, stating that the presence of EU representatives in the border regions of Armenia could only bring geopolitical confrontation to the region.
