US Justice Department Seeks to Transfer Frozen Russian Assets to Kyiv
The US Justice Department aims to utilize over $1 billion in Russian assets in Ukraine that are currently under international sanctions. This was mentioned by Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco in an interview with CBS News.
“We are seeking permission from Congress to use the obtained funds for the benefit of the Ukrainian people,” Monaco stated in response to a question about the future fate of Russia's frozen assets.
Earlier, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov had said that the government and the Bank of Russia had prepared a draft decree that envisions unlocking some foreign assets in exchange for Russian ones. He clarified that the assets of 3.5 million Russians are currently blocked, with the total amount frozen reaching 1.5 trillion rubles. Plans are now in place to initiate the exchange of Russian assets for those of foreign investors.
