Sweden Supports Permanent NATO Bases in the Country

The liberal party in Sweden has expressed support for the permanent deployment of NATO bases within the country. This was announced by the party leader Johan Persson, according to RIA Novosti.

“I think it should be clear that this is a measure to strengthen the security of the Swedish people in a situation where the external world may pose very serious threats to Sweden. Now we have a completely different problem on our hands in our part of the world, within NATO. This means that the presence of permanent NATO bases is necessary,” he stated during an appearance on Sveriges Radio.

Sweden, along with Finland, submitted an application to join the alliance in May 2022 amid the events in Ukraine. Finland became NATO's 31st member on April 4, but Sweden's application has yet to receive final approval from Hungary and Turkey.
